Road Journal via Greyhound from Madison, WI to Panama City, FL 5/15/09

Excerpts from the Road...

5/15/09

i overheard one dreaded hippie saying he can't go back to california due to standing drug charges against him...he was stranded in madison, wi because he got kicked off a bus for smoking while on the bus. he denied it was him. i found him sleeping outside the greyhound station in madison at 6:00 am. he also claimed that a random passenger was the bus driver that had originally kicked him off the bus.

i was sitting next to a man going from gary, in to indianapolis, in who was only in gary to show up in court to negotiate child support charges. the mother of his child didn't show.

the rumors about gary, in are true. the town reeks of death and tragic pasts. even their convention center is a sad scene. rust crawls up its walls and weeds encroach upon its foundation. there is a store in gary called "the casket showroom". it's expressions like these that encapsulate the sadness of what's left of a dying industrial community.

met a guy named kevin in indianapolis who was heading to belzoni, mississippi for his grandmother's funeral. he was originally from milwaukee.

in southern indiana we drove into a beautiful storm. three funnel clouds descended. everyone lived.

Look for more excerpts from the road in the coming days!
